SAP DB Goes Open Source

October 20, 2000

SAP will make the SAP DB database management system available as open-source software under the GNU General Public License, according to an announcement the company made at the October 2000 Frankfurt Linux World.

SAP will host a community forum at http://www.sapdb.org to drive further development of SAP DB with open-source contributors and provide users with free access to the Web-enabled database software so they can rapidly deploy and custom develop applications.

The GNU open-source development method, of which the Linux operating system is probably the most widely known example, makes software source code freely available for anyone to review, enhance, and redistribute. SAP is already actively participating in the open-source community; SAP solutions have been available on Linux since March 1999.

Upon completion of the site infrastructure in Q4 2000, SAP will make the SAP DB available for download. The site will function as a central forum for developers and users to share and exchange enhancements to SAP DB; take part in mailing lists, newsgroups, and chat forums; download software updates; share tips about the software; and locate service and support offerings provided by SAP or other organizations.

SAP DB is an open, SQL-based, relational database management system for small to very large implementations, supporting object orientation and unstructured data. SAP DB adheres to open standards including SQL, JDBC, and ODBC; access from Perl and Python; and HTTP-based services with HTML or extensible markup language (XML) content.

"Open-source development is revolutionizing the software technology infrastructure, from Web servers to operating systems such as Linux. SAP recognizes that the time has come to extend that wave of innovation to the database, and thus SAP DB belongs in the hands of the open-source community," said Karl-Heinz Hess, executive vice president and member of the extended executive board of SAP AG. "We want to foster a dynamic environment for developers and other interested parties to evaluate, critique, and ultimately enhance SAP DB for the benefit of the entire community."

MySAP.com Media Adds Sales and Distribution Features

SAP has expanded its MySAP.com Media offering for all types of media companies with Web-based functionalities. MySAP.com Media is a comprehensive Web-based solution with an open interface allowing media companies -- including newspaper, magazine, and book publishers, as well as broadcasters -- to integrate technical production systems into the business process workflow.

The Web-based functionalities for advertising management within MySAP.com Media allow media companies to use the Internet as a channel for selling print and online advertising. The system also supports upselling. For example, a company can sell and bill for advertising across the various media using the Web, with an aim of increasing productivity along the entire value chain.

With the integrated Internet Editor for classified and semidisplayed advertisements, customers can purchase classified advertisements in print and online through a single channel, cutting down on front- and back-office overhead and reducing the role of advertising middlemen.

In addition, new enhancements of media sales and distribution functionalities allow media companies to sell periodical products such as newspapers and magazines over the Internet, with support for subscription sales. The management of a central business partner along the value chain gives media companies the benefit of SAP's customer relationship management.

SAP is delivering full integration of media product sales functionality with comprehensive logistics execution functions such as warehouse management and inventory management, therefore streamlining the process of selling periodical and nonperiodical products and product kits to resellers and consumers. The media product sales functionality is fully integrated with the existing functions of subscription sales and home delivery. With media product sales capabilities, SAP is delivering media-specific functions for delivery quantity planning, ad mix planning, partial delivery, return processing (which is also supported via the Internet), and circulation audit return. MySAP.com Media supports collaborative planning, forecasting of delivery quantities, and transportation planning.

SAP is presenting the new media product development functionality within the MySAP.com Media solution for the first time at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Oct.18, 2000. The MySAP.com Media solution includes complete product lifecycle management support for book publishers and other media companies. The product development functionality is an integrated, end-to-end business solution for managing media-specific content development and production processes. It is a toolset that lets users streamline product planning, project management, collaboration, and change management, as well as track revenues and costs. Companies can track profitability at any point in the product lifecycle, from planning and evaluating ideas and product proposals to content development and media production. The new product development functionality is designed to shorten the time to market for media products.

The integration of MySAP.com Media functionalities with MySAP.com Business Intelligence enables media companies to access and explore a variety of realtime information on customer segments, customer behavior, and the profitability of every product in a media company's portfolio. With the new product release, MySAP.com Media adds new media-specific content and enhanced reporting capabilities tailored to the individual, and personalized user roles for streamlined business processes. The solution lets media companies access critical business content, including reports, analysis options, and a wide range of standardized key performance indicators, in one place. The provided business content can be modified.

The new functionality will be generally available later this fall with the new MySAP.com Media solution. For more information, see http://www.sap.com/media.
