Conclusion
Both IBM and Oracle follow the general trend to position their DBMS both in the operational (relational and object-oriented) and the decision support application area. Especially the data warehousing arena is in focus and therefore enriched with functionality: DB2 has integrated the Data Warehouse Center and the OLAP Starter Kit within the data base engine since 7.1.; The Data Warehouse Manager was and will be enriched gradually with adapters for external data, currently available adapters include SAP, I2 and Websphere Site Analyzer. Since 7.2, DB2 offers integrated mining functionality by means of a DB2 Extender. OLAP extensions to SQL, handled by the SQL3 Standard (ISO 99), have been added for the last versions of DB2. The functionality now offered is quite impressive and can compete with MDBMS solutions. Oracle has only recently likewise enriched its data base engine with OLAP functionality. ETL-functionality is offered with the so-called Warehouse Builder, scheduling is covered with the Workflow Manager.
DB2 adapters show slight advantages above Oracle in this area. Differences in functionality of OLAP extensions and ETL tools need to be practically evaluated and compared, a task not performable for this paper due to complexity. The benefit of this functionality anyhow remains to be determined once OLAP tool vendors begin to use these extensions.
The integration of eBusiness applications is also focussed by both vendors. XML, messaging services and application server integration are featured.
Positioning of the DBMS as the single point of access to enterprise data (structured and unstructured, relational and non-relational types) was handled in detail in chapter “5.7 Connectivity / Interoperability”).
From a users view Oracle’s approach of tightly integrated software packages can be rewarding.
But only a few enterprises begin from scratch – for others, the DBMS-ability to integrate applications and tools of other vendors is of far greater importance. IBM‘s strategy of being the middleware provider and openly partnering with best-of-breed application and tool vendors seems better suitable to address the users requirements for free choice of solutions.
In summary we see DB2 in a leading position in this area – not only because of IBM’s partnering strategy.
